Coming soon to a blog near you. What Do You Know? for aspiring Journeymen beekeepers.

In 2018 my local bee association hosted a Journeyman course over a few weekends. It was attended by ~32 beekeepers from around the state. We had some wonderful speakers and covered many topics. I was on the organizing committee, and we took every opportunity to squeak in as much as possible with assigned reading between classes, homework, and other assignments. As we approached the last meeting, when the Journeyman test and lab practical would be offered, the students asked for material to prepare them for the testing. Well, of course, the material is what they had been sitting and listening to but they wanted just a bit more preparation, like a mock test.

Thinking back, I decided to offer them an outline of my own notes from when I attended my Journeyman’s course and sat for the testing. Then after giving them a week to digest this, I offered them a mock test. It all reminded me of an abbreviated Dr. Clarence Collison’s book, What Do You Know?

So, for those aspiring Journeymen out there I offer it here in all its imperfection. (If this whets your appetite for more Journeyman material to study, stay tuned or email me if you just can’t wait.)

(Dr. Clarence Collison wrote a book titled What Do You Know? in which he offers thousands of bee questions with answers. The questions were a compilation of questions from a regular column he wrote for Bee Culture over many years. It’s not light reading but may be a book you’d like to acquire as you continue your journey from Journeyman to Master.)

Disclaimer: This review outline has been created using my notes from a SCBA Journeyman class taken some years ago. I’ve tried to make corrections if new data has presented itself. Its purpose is to offer some guidelines for the Journeyman level class content. The Journeyman test is created by the SCBA MBP Committee and I have not reviewed the current test. To guide you in test preparation, use your PowerPoints, lecture notes, and The Hive and the Honey Bee. In case you find discrepancies, or errors in my outline, I defer to your current instructors and The Hive and the Honey Bee.
Good luck!
