~ The more I studied beekeeping, the less I knew, until, finally, I knew nothing. But, even though I knew nothing, I still had plenty to unlearn. Charles Martin Simon

Meeting Reality vs What Seems Deserved

After a strong nectar flow, it’s tempting to pull one more frame than I should.

The hive has spent weeks working the flow — foragers flying dawn to dusk, house bees curing and capping wax over the good stuff. Watching all that capped comb, heavy and gold, it feels like a reward is owed. One more frame off the top feels earned.

There’s a story wrapped around the harvest. The bees worked hard, I worked hard hauling supers and running the extractor, so a full crop feels like the right ending.

Described plainly, it is removing stored carbohydrate from a colony before winter arrives.

It uses a large part of the reserves the colony has available for the cold months. Later, when the cluster needs food and there’s no flow left to replenish it, there isn’t enough room left in the hive’s budget to make it to spring. Then the colony starves out.

The plain description doesn’t make the honey taste worse. It’s still beautiful, still wanted. It just makes the trade visible.

The question isn’t whether I deserve the harvest. It’s whether that particular reward is worth the rest of the colony’s year.
