Christoph Johann Heinrich Gravenhorst

A schoolteacher from Brunswick, Gravenhorst invented the Bogenstülper, a straw skep with curved movable frames. It combined the warmth of a traditional straw hive with modern comb management. His textbook Der praktische Imker (1873) went through many editions, and in 1883 he founded the Illustrierte Bienenzeitung, an important German bee journal.
