~ The more I studied beekeeping, the less I knew, until, finally, I knew nothing. But, even though I knew nothing, I still had plenty to unlearn. Charles Martin Simon

Excerpt from Journeyman to Master Beekeeper Guidebook – Revised 2026

Mentor as Much as Possible

In anticipation of, and readying yourself for progression within the Master Beekeeper Program, make yourself available to new beekeepers, especially when something has gone wrong in their hives. These “cold calls” are as valuable to you as they are to the beekeeper you’re helping. Each visit is a chance to sharpen your own hive inspection routine, sharpen your assessment and diagnostic instincts, and get real practice reading a colony under conditions you don’t control — the same unpredictability you’ll face in your own advanced field exams. There’s no better rehearsal for that exam than doing it for real, again and again, on hives you didn’t choose and problems you didn’t stage.

Treat every mentoring visit as if you were delivering your field exam. Walk the site, inspect the hive, and reach your diagnosis and recommendations exactly as you would under evaluation — no shortcuts because it’s “just a mentoring call.” Then, after each visit, debrief yourself: How was your presentation? Did you explain your reasoning in a way the new beekeeper could follow and learn from? How confident were you in your read of the colony’s condition, and did your plan of action hold up? Where did you hesitate, second-guess yourself, or miss something you caught only in hindsight?

Over time, this repetition is what turns a competent inspection into a practiced one. Use every mentoring visit to refine your full routine end to end — site selection, exterior assessment, frame-by-frame reading, and the summary, diagnosis, and recommendations you deliver at the end — until it becomes second nature. The more new beekeepers you mentor, the more field-ready you become yourself.
