~ The more I studied beekeeping, the less I knew, until, finally, I knew nothing. But, even though I knew nothing, I still had plenty to unlearn. Charles Martin Simon

Made of the Smallest Things

A nucleus colony fits in a box about the size of a bread loaf. It carries a queen, several thousand bees, and five frames of drawn comb. Nothing about it suggests a honey house, yet every production colony starts this way, and its growth is made of small components.

A worker bee’s summer life is a rotation of small jobs. She cleans cells, so the queen has a place to lay. She feeds larvae, tending them with a few drops at a time. She builds comb, one wax scale at a time, shaping each cell by hand. She fans her wings to cool the brood nest and dehydrate nectar. She stands guard at the entrance, checking each returning bee. Only near the end does she fly out to forage. Each task is minor. Together they make up a life.

The colony works the same way. The queen lays one egg per cell, and the nest grows as each cell is filled. Workers pass nectar to one another, drop by drop, until it thickens into honey. Some bees carry water, others pack pollen, others seal cells with wax caps. No bee manages the whole. The colony’s routine is a long chain of short tasks, each handed on to the next.

My years in nursing taught me that care works this way too. Recovery came from a turned pillow, a timely dose, and a few quiet words at the right moment. Beekeeping keeps reminding me of that, through the same small, repeated motions.

When I lift a frame of capped honey, I see the result of many small tasks, each done in its turn. The hive makes honey because its work is divided into pieces so small that anyone can do them, and so constant that the pieces never stop.
