Beginning Beekeeper Sample Test

Here we have extracted the information from the PowerPoints, program agendas, and verified by online research. Chapters, each about three pages, make this a short and concise study guide.

The sample test provided here is an opportunity to test your knowledge and immediately grade yourself with the answer key following each section of the test. Rationale and references are provided for deeper dives into the material.

You may find an error(s). For that reason and towards that end, I have provided references to take you forward in your own research.

Journeyman Beekeeper Study Guide

Journeyman Beekeeper Sample Test

This guide was built to teach the content of the separate accompanying examination. The 365 questions on the Intermediate (Journeyman) examination for the Southeastern United States was read, sorted by subject, and assigned to a chapter. Where the examination tests a fact, this guide teaches the fact. Where the examination tests a judgment — and most of the harder items do — this guide teaches the reasoning that produces the judgment. Appendix D maps every examination question to the chapter that covers it, so you can verify for yourself that nothing on the test is unstudied.

A word about what the Journeyman level actually asks of you. The Certified level asks whether you can keep bees alive. The Journeyman level asks whether you can explain to somebody else why they should do what you are telling them to do. The examination reflects this: it is full of items where three of the four answers contain a true statement attached to a false explanation. You will not pass by recognizing vocabulary. You will pass by understanding mechanism.

This guide is written for the experienced beekeeper preparing for master-level certification. Every chapter is built on a single premise: the Master Beekeeper examination tests why, not just what.

Each chapter opens with an orientation that names the two or three ideas that organize everything else, moves through connected expository prose explaining the underlying science and craft, and closes with a “Numbers to Know Cold” table, a “Common Misconceptions” section drawn from the errors that appear as examination distractors, self-check questions with model answers, and a curated further reading list.

Beekeeping Manipulations

Every colony is managed through a short list of interventions: what the beekeeper does with the frames, the boxes, the queen and the bees themselves. This handbook gathers those interventions, the manipulations, into one reference. It describes 168 of them, from lighting a smoker to instrumental insemination.

Most of these methods are old. Pagden described his artificial swarm in 1868, Doolittle his grafting system in 1889, and Demaree his swarm control in 1884. They have lasted because they work with the bees’ own biology rather than against it. The brood cycle, the forager’s attachment to place, and the colony’s response to losing its queen do not change. So the methods, once understood, can be adapted to any hive and any yard.

The entries are written for a working beekeeper. Each one says what the manipulation does and why it works, when it is called for, what to bring, and how to carry it out step by step. It then gives the common variations, the usual mistakes, and a follow-up schedule. Read the section that matches the season or the problem in front of you. Then go to the hive with a plan, and a clear idea of what you will check on the follow-up visit.
